A police record -- officially called a Certificate of Character -- is one of the most requested documents when applying for jobs, visas, university programmes, or any position of trust.
What Is a Certificate of Character?
It is an official document issued by the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) confirming whether or not you have a criminal record.
What You Need
- Valid photo ID (passport, national ID, or driver's licence)
- TRN (Tax Registration Number)
- Two passport-sized photos
- Completed application form
- Application fee (check the current JCF or PICA fee schedule)
Where to Apply
Your local police station -- Visit the station that covers the area where you live.
PICA (Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency) -- Their main office is in Kingston. Often faster for people in the Corporate Area.
Processing Time
Standard processing takes between 5 and 10 working days. Express processing is available at some locations for an additional fee.
Collecting Your Certificate
You will be given a collection slip when you apply. Return on the stated date with that slip and your ID.
Validity
Most institutions accept a Certificate of Character issued within the last three months, so time your application to the deadline of whatever you are applying for.
Tips
- Go early in the morning to avoid long queues.
- Keep the original and make certified copies.
- If your name has changed, bring supporting documentation.
